WebbShanks disease was first documented by Dr Jenny Shanks in 2014 in the Sydney region. The disease is caused by a strain of Lysinibacillus sphaericus bacterium. Until now it was known only from a small number of Tetragonula carbonaria and Austroplebeia australis hives in Sydney and Richmond, NSW.
